Applying for a top-up scholarship and MBCRC Industry Partner project

Does your research ambition align with the research strength of your potential supervisor and a potential industry partner? If the answer is yes then you are well on track to undertake industry-led research in the MBCRC!

The image below provides an overview of the different pathways for PhD, Masters and Honours students.

A pdf of this Application Pathway diagram can be downloaded here.

If you require a Top-up Application Form, you can download it here.

Email MBCRC Connect Educate Train Manager here: Associate Professor Kirsten Heimann.

If you are already enrolled at one of MBCRC’s partner universities and you have a competitive base scholarship (i.e. your scholarship is not provided as part of an MBCRC project), but do not have a MBCRC industry partner, then please follow these steps:

  1. View our list of industry partners and investigate the main business case of industry partners that are relevant to your research.
  2. Write a brief abstract detailing the challenge or industry opportunity; the approach to solve the problem or fast track building the opportunity; the fit with MBCRC and expected outcomes. Please upload this abstract when submitting the Expression of Interest form (see point 3).
  3. Complete an Expression of Interest Form which is an online Google form and submitted online. In this form, please select the industry partners that would benefit from your research.
  4. When you have completed the form, please email the Education and Training Manager Dr Kirsten Heimann to alert her that you have lodged an EOI. In this email please also identify the industry partners you would like to work with.
  5. The Education and Training Manager will liaise with industry to ascertain whether they are willing to support the project as is, or whether changes would be required. She will also liaise with the student and supervisor to ensure the project for approval is aligned with industry needs, co-led and co-funded by a MBCRC industry partner.

Award criteria

All student projects are reviewed by MBCRC Management, and, if deemed competitive and suitable, funding will be approved by MBCRC Ltd. Proposals will need to satisfy at least the following criteria to be eligible for funding:

  • Relevance to MBCRC’s strategic plan;
  • Quality and feasibility of the science;
  • Commercial potential; and
  • Broader impacts.

Eligibility

Domestic and international PhD students who secure an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), Research Training Program (RTP), or equivalent, competitive primary scholarship (“Major Scholarship”) are eligible to apply to receive a MBCRC top up scholarship. Alternatively, you may liaise with your supervisor to write a research proposal to be funded by an industry partner that your project would contribute to. Such research proposals can allocate a base scholarship for a student in the budget.

For Master degree students preference will be given to competitive scholarship holders. For Master degree students who are not recipients of a major scholarship award, a GPA equivalent of 6.0 is required, transcripts and evidence of prior formal research training (e.g. thesis) needs to be submitted together with the application.

For Honours students, an undergraduate GPA of 6.0 is preferred and transcripts need to be submitted together with the application.

Top up levels

The MBCRC scholarship provides eligible research students with a stipend of $10,000 per annum for PhD students and $5,000 per annum for Honours and Master students. In addition, operational funds of $10,000 are provided per annum for PhD students and $5,000 for Masters and Honours students, which may also be used to attend an annual conference.

Funding of the MBCRC scholarship is split 2:1:1 between pledged funds by industry partners, research organisation partners and MBCRC Ltd.

How research scholarships are funded

To qualify for an MBCRC PhD top-up worth $20,000 in total per annum, funded by industry, the research provider and MBCRC in a 2:1:1 ratio, candidates must have secured a base scholarship, e.g. APA or equivalent, or a scholarship budget for in an MBCRC-industry research project.

Honours and Masters projects top-up scholarships are $10,000, funded also in a 2:1:1 ratio, as for PhD projects. As these students typically do not hold base scholarships, they must have an outstanding academic achievement record.

Conditions of award

The award of a MBCRC PhD and/or Masters/Honours Supplementary Scholarship, and commencement of payment of funds by MBCRC to the administering university, is conditional on the following:

  • Acceptance by the student of his/her enrolling University’s offer of admission.
  • For PhD students, proof of successful award of a Major Scholarship (as previously defined) is necessary, unless their application is part of an MBCRC-Industry research project.
  • For Honours and Master degree students satisfying the above defined eligibility criteria.
  • Confirmation that the student has commenced the associated research project approved by MBCRC Ltd;
  • The execution of a Scholarship Agreement signed by MBCRC and the enrolling University; and
  • The signing by the student of a Deed Poll which assigns all Project IP to MBCRC Ltd. or nominee.
