Marine Bioproducts CRC is Australia’s largest research and development hub dedicated to producing new and sustainable products from our marine environment, bringing together more than 50 partners. Discover the benefits of partnering with us below.

We aim to make Australia a global player in marine biotech, an industry that is forecast to be worth more than US$700 billion by 2035.

Thanks to a federal government grant of $59 million and co-funding from our partners, we anticipate deploying up to $270m in cash and in-kind resources over 10 years.

In response to industry needs, our research leaders work with industry partners to assemble the best research teams in the country to deliver solutions. Find out more about our research programs here.

Our partners range from teams of university researchers to ‘people with an idea’; from international industry giants to local start-ups; from seasoned manufacturers to artisan producers.

Benefits of being a Core Partner

Leveraged Funding

  • All industry partners make scheduled cash contributions to MBCRC. We allocate an equal contribution into a research project budget. As such for each $1 an industry partner contributes, the available research budget is $2.
  • Substantial in-kind contribution brings significant additional resources to projects.

Industry-friendly Intellectual Property model

  • Project IP initially accrues to MBCRC.
  • We then seek a suitable commercialisation outlet and usually this is the industry partner involved in the development of the project.
  • Core Partners have an explicit ‘first-right’ to negotiate utilisation of Project IP.
  • Industry Partners only need to deal with a single entity to access Project IP (MBCRC), irrespective of how many partners were involved in its development.

Broad community of research and industry collaborators

  • Access a collaboration of 11 highly-capable research institutions and over 50 companies working in the marine bioproducts sector.
  • This ecosystem of research capability and industry drive provides a unique environment for developing high-impact and commercially focused collaborative R&D projects in the marine bioproducts field.

Core Partners drive strategic direction of project/s they are involved in

  • Core Partners are entitled to a share of any commercial benefit from projects they are involved in, even where they are not the commercialisation lead.
  • Core Partners are also eligible to become ‘Members’ of MBCRC Ltd. and vote on the Directors of the management company.

  • Presentations from industry leaders and researchers showcasing the latest findings and developments
  • Opportunities for collaboration to solve shared challenges
