Marine Bioproducts Cooperative Research Centre (MBCRC) is delighted to sponsor Imogen Morison, who is one of 22 scholars recently awarded an AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship. Imogen will undertake an internship with one or more of our industry partners, as part of her Bachelor of Agribusiness at the University of Queensland. In addition to her excellent application, Imogen’s interests and career aspirations strongly align with MBCRC’s industry partner projects.

“I am so honoured that MBCRC chose to sponsor me. I am excited to learn about new and sustainable products, research and new findings from the marine environment. To be able to work with industry leaders closely is a dream of mine: I will gain so much exposure, awareness and knowledge about aquaculture and marine bioproducts,” Imogen says.

Dr Kirsten Heimann, MBCRC’s Connect Educate Train Manager adds, “It’s very important to enable our bright future generation to have real and broad experience early on to gain a good insight into the industry. We hope this will translate into young students becoming active thinkers about what is needed for the industry to thrive, along with an ability to contribute to future solutions.”

Imogen grew up in Brisbane but has been closely associated with agriculture through her father, who was raised on a farm and eventually built his own agribusiness. Through this she became passionate about learning more about the different sectors along the value chain and the ways in which the value chain can become more transparent and efficient. “I am open to pursuing any and all career avenues once I complete my degree. This opportunity could be an amazing way to refine this and direct me towards a specific job in the future,” Imogen says.

The Horizon Scholarship provides scholars with a $10,000 bursary over two years. As part of the program, students also attend an annual four-day professional development workshop and complete two weeks of industry placement each year. Imogen is excited to attend a week-long summit in Cairns in July, where she will connect with her fellow scholarship awardees.

MBCRC looks forward to meeting Imogen in person at our annual conference Marine BioConnect 23 in August this year, where she will have the opportunity to connect with other students in the marine bioproducts industry from diverse backgrounds.

The 2023 AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship program is supported by seven Research and Development Corporations (RDCs), along with Kalyx Australia, Baiada Poultry, Southern NSW Innovation Hub and Marine Bioproducts Cooperative Research Centre (MBCRC), to develop the next generation of rural leaders.
