Leaders from across Australia came together in Jervis Bay, New South Wales, for the National Integrative Care for Epithelia (NICE) Research Workshop to explore how science is backing the next generation of skin health solutions.
Hosted by Dr Pia Winberg, Director and Chief Scientist at Venus Shell Systems, the Workshop brought together more than 20 experts from industry, research, and First Nations communities. The event opened with a walkthrough of the production facility at Venus Shell Systems, followed by in-depth sessions exploring clinical innovations in oncology, glycoscience, sustainable biotechnology, and the scaling of biorefineries to meet growing demand.
Highlights included discussion on the advances in next-generation biomolecules, such as Phyaluronic™ and Phychondrin™, alongside progress in delivering Australian-made and marine-derived skin health bioproducts.
“Seaweed has a long history in health and medicine,” Dr Winberg said.
“We’re focused on figuring out how seaweed and marine compounds actually work, and how we can turn that into something useful for people in their everyday lives”.
The NICE Research Workshop is gaining significant attention, with media coverage highlighting breakthroughs in marine-based skincare, the integration of First Nations knowledge, and emerging clinical applications for skin health. Beyond the science, the Workshop reinforced the power of collaboration and how shared expertise can accelerate innovation to unlock new opportunities for Australia’s marine bioproducts sector.
Dr Esther Callcott, Senior Lecturer at Charles Sturt University, highlighted the importance of culturally informed approaches in advancing health outcomes.
“The NICE Research Workshop was an incredibly positive experience that generated rich discussions and meaningful connections with leaders aligned in purpose,” Dr Callcott said.
“I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the potential of our First Nations work and look forward to continued collaboration”.
