The Marine Bioproducts Cooperative Research Centre (MBCRC) was proud to sponsor a recent Fishing for Therapy event, hosted by Australian Women in Fishing at Barramundi Adventures Darwin in Berry Springs, Northern Territory.
This unique initiative offers women the chance to gain hands-on fishing experience while promoting mental health and emotional wellbeing.
A core feature of the program is the use of the fishing rod as a “Safety Stick”, a practical tool and powerful symbol that encourages women to take time out and deescalate emotional situations when needed.
Kylie Graham, Founding Director of Australian Women in Fishing and proud Aboriginal woman, reflected on the day saying, “There is no better feeling than watching someone catch their first fish!”.
“The program is special because it brings together women for a day of healing, laughter, and connection. We pause, reflect, and recharge in a safe and supportive environment, with fishing at the heart of the experience.”, Kylie said.
Each of the ten participants were provided with a rod, reel, tackle box, and a shirt, through the generous support of BCF – Boating, Camping, Fishing. Every woman left with their own “Safety Stick” as a meaningful reminder of the day, along with the proud memory of catching a barramundi.
