The Marine Bioproducts Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) has announced a new initiative to strengthen practical workforce capability across its Partner network, supporting Australia’s growing marine bioproducts sector from production through to manufacturing and product delivery.
The Applied Skills Training Fund provides financial support for Marine Bioproducts CRC Scholars, postdoctoral researchers, Industry Partners, and collaborators to undertake vocational training and technical upskilling aligned with industry needs.
Sarah Ugalde, Education and Communications Manager at the Marine Bioproducts CRC, said the initiative addresses a critical gap in the sector.
“The Applied Skills Training Fund is about equipping people with the practical skills needed to turn research and development into real-world commercial outcomes,” Sarah said.
“As the sector grows, so does the need for hands-on technical capability. This initiative makes sure the people driving innovation have the skills and experience needed to move ideas beyond the lab and into industry”.
The Applied Skills Training Fund is delivered through the Marine Bioproducts CRC Education & Training Program, and supports higher degree Scholars and others within the CRC network to strengthen practical skills.
Through the capped fund, recipients can access certified short courses, technical workshops, and professional training programs delivered by Registered Training Organisations, Universities, and recognised industry providers. Training includes areas such as aquaculture technologies, laboratory analytical methods, marine biotechnology, bioprocessing systems, regulatory compliance, and marine product development. Funding may also support travel, accommodation, and materials required to participate.
Marine Bioproducts CRC CEO, Daniel E. Abrahams, said the initiative reflects the CRC’s commitment to developing a highly skilled, industry-ready workforce.
“Research alone does not deliver impact. It is the translation of that research into products, technologies, and businesses that drives value,” Daniel said.
“The Applied Skills Training Fund ensures our researchers, Partners, and collaborators have the capabilities needed to accelerate that translation”
Expressions of interest are now open. Applications should outline the proposed training and how it supports the applicant’s professional development, as well as its contribution to marine bioproducts research, technology development, or commercialisation.
